When I first saw the black gun on display at the gallery, I thought 'Cool! A gun...Is that an art piece?.. Why is it so special?' That was before I walked around and saw the other half, the colourful, pretty side. I found it very interesting. After I read the title, the gun was more than interesting. It was a clever masterpiece. It carried a hidden meaning.
The gun itself symbolizes war and war meant death, suffering, hell on earth.
Supiee painted one half of the gun beautifully with acryllic paint. Its lovely to look at and that shows how we, the public only hear about the things of war that we want to hear. For example, in our history text books, chapters spoke of wars won by our country. The bravery of soldiers in battle. But we dont hear of the misery war brought to the land, we dont hear the moans or cries of the dying. Also, when leaders speak of war, they say its the only way for peace. They promise the heaven of peace the war fights for but we dont get to see whats on the other side of the promised heaven.
The artist had a message to convey and Supiee did just that. Supiee used the gestalt principle, closure. Completing an image. Even without the title there, one could complete the image and see the message the gun held. Understanding how true it is would hit hard. The impact of realization so great, it leaves you speechless. I said, "Wow..." No room to argue there at all.
